From: Mr R.J.Lewis, 4 AEL-Y-FELIN, PENPARC, Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire, SA62 5BU. Dear Colin At least George McRae had the courtesy, and courage to answer the "Rip off" charges laid against the manufacturers, however he doesn't explain why the basic costs appear to be excessive. Micro chip prices have seen dramatic reductions over the years, compare the price of a colour TV to what they were ten years ago, so why are the detector prices increasing? He also raises the old chestnut of advising against purchasing from sources other than approved dealers because the warranty will be compromised, surely if the electronic parts are universal then the manufactuers have a moral duty to rectify any problem regardless of where the detectors were purchased. Until the manufactuers remove the cartels, and price fixing, the metal detectorist will still be be subjected to a blatant "Rip off". Internet selling of motor cars has forced car prices down, we can only hope that the same will happen with metal detectors, that is the way ahead. So come on White's and the others, give us a break, and enable us to purchase our detectors in a free market, allow the small retailer to make a living by selling detectors at a realistic price. Yours sincerely, ROY LEWIS.
Mr R.Long from Somerset has just made his hundredth 'free recovery', finding a tractor part for a grateful local farmer. Reg said "as well as the good publicity for the hobby in his local area, the joy that re-uniting people with there lost property has been reward enough". Mrs Long who wrote in to tell us of her husbands prowess added that he had gained so may permissions to search farms because of "how the word spead around" that he would never need to knock on a door again.
